You don't have to believe in an afterlife to believe that there are people gone from this earth you can still make proud of you.

Your Mom Has A Blog
I doubt that you still laugh or cry in the quiet of your grave, but I'm confident that you still worry as a parent.

On the one hand, don't take everything seriously.  On the other hand, don't expect anything to change until you do.

We don't always get the miracle we pray for, but we nearly always get the strength we pray for.

Happiness is always a risk, whereas the unhappiness in our lives tends to be familiar, tolerable and fully paid for.

To be ultimately wise is to know everything, none of it for sure.

As hard as two people may try, it is impossible to travel diverging paths by day and meet back in the same place every night.

To know history is to inherit the ultimate "To Do" list.

As any long-married couple can tell you, there are ways to demonstrate love so subtle that they are undetectable by a third party -- and often by the second party.

If you look like someone who's willing to listen, you hear a lot of explanations owed to other people.

To hear someone say, "If I had my life to live over, I wouldn't do a single thing differently" must make even experience want to leave teaching.

To condone a political injustice is merely to take your place in the line of eventual victims.

There is a tendency for someone who stubbornly mistakes us for a better person to be proved right.

Nothing shakes your faith in democracy like the family's 3-2 vote for fudge sundaes for breakfast.

It is easier to battle ignorance than misinformation because, as a rule, ignorance is not refreshed hourly.

To conclude that a miracle is not going to happen, and that it's up to you, is the first requirement of a miracle.

While life can hit us with the unexpected, most things go wrong pretty much when we thought they would, for the reasons we thought they might.

We are lured into unhappiness by its reliability, the assurance that at the end of the day, it will be there.

In the end what makes us all equal is that we are all just passing through.

An interesting fact as Presidents Day nears.  Did you know that the Washington Monument was named after Abraham Lincoln?  That's right -- Lincoln was named in 1809; the Washington Monument wasn't named until 1885.

You pray for a miracle -- for divine intervention -- until one day it finally hits you -- that you are the tool by which God intervenes, that your prayer for a miracle was answered on the day you were born.

One thing we probably have in common with the ancients is that they didn't know they were living in biblical times, either.

No politician ever catered to the ignorant for the purpose of educating them.

What the immigrant so often brings to a new land is a quest for learning, a respect for education -- the antidote to the nativist belief that it can only be true if you ain't never learned it in no school.

Far from knowing history, you wonder if politicians today even suspect that anyone is writing this down.

In a time when lies are fabricated out of whole cloth, you kinda pine for the days when liars manipulated the truth.

I have faith that "the lion will lay down with the lamb."  What I doubt is that the elephant will lie down with the donkey.

Meanwhile, February goes about its mischief -- publicly giving birth to a new crop of "leave me alone" Aquarians while privately conceiving the next round of "follow me" Scorpios.

Can you think of a road service sign more exasperating than "Rest Stop. No Facilities?"  I'm thinking maybe "Chick-fil-A.  No Chicken" or "Sleep Inn.  No Overnight Stays."

Life:  a brief moment in eternity when you can't claim you were somewhere else at the time.

The truth is more often a lone voice than a chorus, especially when the chorus is in perfect harmony.

From the CEO's report:  "The bad news is that we continue to go around in circles.  The good news is that we have realized a sharp increase in circles completed."

Nothing perturbs people born to privilege like people of merit acting as if they were born to privilege.

Yes, there are reasons no one could ever love you, and you can be sure that the people who love you know them all.

In a dream I prayed to God for certainty, and a voice answered, "You will meet people of certainty, and you will change your mind."

Nothing reduces the odds against you like telling them to bleep off.
